What is Discernment Counselling?
Discernment Counselling is a short-term process (consisting of one to five sessions) where the goal is to gain clarity in the decision about whether someone is willing to work on the relationship. Discernment Counselling addresses the situation when there is a mixed-agenda couple. A mixed agenda couple is when one partner is leaning into working on the relationship and the other partner is leaning outward.

Honouring that someone may be more reluctant to work on the relationship, Discernment Counselling offers a safe place to discuss those feelings and choices prior to any Relationship Counselling.
Discernment Counselling focuses on finding clarity in taking a path forward. The three different pathways to moving forward are: Path 1 is staying in the relationship as is; Path 2 is separation or divorce; and Path 3 is a 6-month commitment to working on the relationship (taking separation or divorce off the table to focus on dedicative work on the relationship). The goal of Discernment Counselling is to provide clarity on which path is best for you. Path 3 offers a transition to Relationship Counselling.

Discernment Counselling is intended to explore the feelings and decisions around working on the relationship, If someone intends to find support for announcing their divorce intentions, other services such as divorce mediation are better options!
