The Counselling Team - Shelby

Shelby
Registered Social Worker, MSW

Over the past ten years, I have had the privilege of working with children, adolescents, and adults across a variety of settings. This experience has enhanced my ability to build and cultivate meaningful relationships, while also providing me with valuable insights into the barriers individuals and families encounter in accessing essential services and resources.

My goal is to provide a safe and non-judgmental environment where everyone feels respected, valued and understood. My approach is collaborative when working with children and their families. I recognize the vital role that the family system plays in an individual’s life and well-being. Understanding the dynamics within a family allows me to work more effectively with individuals, as it provides insight into their experiences and challenges. By considering the family context, I can better support individuals in their personal growth and healing, fostering healthier relationships and coping strategies that resonate beyond their immediate circumstances.

My practice is grounded in a trauma informed, client-centered, strengths-based approach with the use of self-reflection and mindfulness. I also integrate various other modalities such as Play Therapy modalities (Puppets, Sandtray, expressive art), Theraplay, DBT, and Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR). I believe each individual has skills and abilities that can assist in their healing process.

“Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning.  But for children, play is serious learning.  Play is the work of childhood

My History

I was born and raised in Edmonton, surrounded by a close- knit, supportive family.  This upbringing greatly influenced the beliefs and values I hold today.

In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my two cats (Rumi & Chai), friends and family. I love working out at the gym, practicing pilates, and yoga, and attending events in Edmonton.. I am also very passionate about travelling and exploring new places around the world.
