Podcasts: what I'm listening too and why I love them!

I am a big fan of podcasts. One of my favourite activities includes throwing in my AirPods and listening to familiar voices speak on topics that interest me while I move my body. Whether it's a long walk, gardening, cleaning the house or a long drive...my favourite podcasters spend a signifiant amount of time talking to me. As an audio learner, I find that podcasts are an excellent way for me to retain information! I will often listen to an author's podcast prior to buying the book as not every author is for everyone!

I am not a true crime person or sci fi, so I usually steer clear of those categories. I also steer clear of news podcasts as I've had to create boundaries with the barrage of world events. Podcasts that interest me usually fall into 3 categories: humour, health and learning. Regardless of what interests you, there is most likely a bundle of podcasts to fit that mood, hobby or interest.

If you haven't gotten into podcasts and you are interested but don't know where to start...here are a few tips:

-look for your favorite authors. Many authors now have podcasts to support their continuing work!

-look for topics that naturally interest you. If you love gardening, search that field! Interested in wine, sports, parenting, etc....search it up. There is quite literally a podcast for almost everything!

-try, try, again. I recommend sampling at least 3 episodes. Everyone can have an off day and not every guest will interest you. Usually a sampling of 3 will let you know the host style and you can determine if that is compatible.

Here is a list of some of my favourites:

Podcasts to make you laugh

-Smartless. This podcast is hosted by 3 of my favourite male actors: Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes and Will Arnett. A new episode loads every Monday and it consists of these 3 individuals carrying on light dialogue with a special mystery guest. The podcast is simple and authentic and it feels like you are chatting with friends. It does have an Explicit rating so be prepared!

-Bitch Sesh. This podcast will not be for everyone but it is legit my favourite. As a lover of every "real housewife of..." franchise, this podcast hits the spot. Hosted by actress Casey Wilson (author of "the wreckage of my presence") and Danielle Schneider (talented writer and actress). These two wonderfully quick witted women initially began with breaking down bravo episodes but have now evolved to include ridiculous guests, real life struggles, and a genuine network of inspiriting and intelligent women just shooting the sh*t. Again, a rating of Explicit so tread carefully!

-The World's First Podcast. This podcast initially started with 2 sisters (Erin and Sara Foster) sharing details of their joint ventures and family experiences. This has slowly become a love of mine. Both sisters are advocates of social justice and their self deprecating style in blend with their sibling rivalry creates a very interesting balance of learning and humour. I love that both Sara and Erin feel like real people who speak on women's issues, specific to those awkward and unique "middle aged" years from 35-45. Again, rated Explicit.

Health podcasts

-Brain Over Binge. I originally got hooked on this podcast due to a love of the originating book (with the same name) by Kathryn Hansen. If you struggle with emotional eating or maladaptive eating habits, this podcast may interest you. With a "clean" rating, you can listen to this podcast on your home device! It is an interesting blend of science that debunks some psychological theories about eating. If you are struggling with your relationship with food, this may be a good option!

-This Naked Mind. This interesting podcast is hosted by author Annie Grace and it explores the role of alcohol in our lives and culture. I really like the movement and focus on recovery culture and she provides many other supports and resources as well. A very insightful listen. An explicit rating.

-Other People's Problems. This podcast prides itself on real problems and real talk. It is a real insight into the therapy sessions of others. At the very least, it normalizes therapy and the problems people face. The range of topics covered is great and you would be hard pressed to not find something relatable or interesting! With a clean rating you can listen to this podcast almost anywhere!

Learning podcast

-Stuff you should know. This podcast covers a range of obscure topics to interest almost anyone! The hosts (Josh Clark and Chuck Bryant) don't pride themselves on being experts and their conversations are light and interesting. If you are curious about learning, this is a great place to start! Clean rating.
